The decision stems from rapid advancements in quantum technology, particularly in hardware and error correction techniques, making existing encryption techniques, including RSA, increasingly vulnerable. As adversaries might engage in “store now, decrypt later” attacks, Google has prioritized areas like authentication, digital signatures, Android, Chrome, and cloud services for the upgrade to robust post-quantum encryption methods. This policy signals a critical shift within the industry as firms, government bodies, and users are urged to prepare for these changes ahead of the 2029 benchmark.

Implementation of Hybrid Systems

While Google does not foresee the emergence of a cryptographically relevant quantum computer (CRQC) by 2029, the direct approach adopts a risk management strategy amid ambiguous progress.
