World Liberty Financial Navigates Social Media Disturbance

World Liberty Financial (WLFI) announced on February 23, 2026, that its USD1 stablecoin experienced a drop of approximately 7% due to what the company described as a “coordinated attack” involving hacked accounts of its co-founders and short-seller activity.Reportedly, the incident exemplified ongoing volatility in the cryptocurrency market as heightened regulatory scrutiny looms.

The incident briefly pushed USD1 down to lows of **$0.993–$0.994**, with the token managing to revert back to values near $0.998–$0.999 shortly thereafter. WLFI maintained its assurance of the coin’s integrity, emphasizing a design that is “100% backed” by a combination of cash, U.S. Treasuries, and government money market funds stored by BitGo. The company also highlighted its “radically transparent” architecture, where users can verify reserves through its official website.

Details of the Alleged Attack

In a statement, WLFI co-founder Zach Witkoff discussed the on-chain data observed during the attack. He stated there were no significant sell-offs by major holders, liquidity withdrawals, or changes in the overall supply of USD1, which collectively underscored the token’s resilience. Despite the sudden volatility, Witkoff expressed confidence that the attack “didn’t work,” asserting strong structural foundations for the stablecoin.

The company attributed the drop in value primarily to liquidity issues exacerbated by activity on social media, including false narratives propagated by paid influencers, rather than any fundamental failures in the token’s architecture. Analysts also noted that these incidents of fluctuating valuation are increasingly common for centralized stablecoins, especially those connected to political figures, due to heightened regulatory pressures and investor uncertainty.

The broader implications of WLFI’s struggles echo previous incidents within the organization, including a notable co-founder account hack in 2025. Such events continue to illustrate the precarious nature of political affiliations and their influence on cryptocurrency ventures.

Market Reactions and Future Outlook

Analysts opine that the markets remain fraught with volatility as they await further technical proof regarding the alleged attacks on WLFI, including how short-seller positions may have influenced trading behavior. Currently, USD1 commands a market cap of around $5 billion, necessitating continuous observation relative to dominant players like Tether (USDT) and USD Coin (USDC).

Despite short-term volatility, the incident amplifies a vital conversation surrounding regulatory scrutiny on stablecoins, along with the associated risks that come with projects having strong political ties. Expert opinions contend that regulators are likely to scrutinize these types of ventures more heavily moving forward, potentially reshaping the landscape of stablecoin investments.
